In Ryzom, players of the game can explore a "science-fantasy" world whilst fighting monsters, harvesting natural resources and crafting unique items.
Atys is an entirely natural planet, where "hunting" usually involves slaughtering animals and the vast majority of equipment is created by other players. As in most MMORPGs, combat is still a popular activity, but players may also "dig" for resources and use a simple system to craft unique items (recipes for ultimate items exist, but they are closely guarded).
Actions are composed of card-like stanzas which are bought from trainers. Players earn points to buy new stanzas by successfully using previous actions; killing stronger monsters, harvesting better materials and crafting better equipment will result in a faster rate of action growth.
Atys features five complete ecosystems filled with diverse flora and fauna (much of which can be used in item crafting), as well as numerous background animations and beautiful landscaping.
The Nevrax team has strived to make Atys simulate a realistic environment and has had major success in this field. Animals and various creatures in the world of Atys have differing AI, based upon their species that allows them to behave in a realistic manner. The AI of the creatures allows them to perform many realistic behaviors, such as migration, movement as a herd or pack, and exhibiting behavior of real-life animals. Carnivores, for example, will hunt other animals for food, and certain animals are known to hunt in packs, making them even more dangerous if a homin is to encounter one.
There are as well, many minor details in the Saga of Ryzom that have made it an original world. Weather effects are present, and everything from rain to meteor showers, will occur on a regular basis based upon what season that the world currently is in. One creative aspect is also that certain materials need for crafting, can only be found during certain conditions, such as rain, or during a certain season.
